EMILY DICKINSON. 627

John Atkinson Grimshaw (1836-1893).

The Tint I cannot take—is best—
The color too remote
That I could show it in Bazaar—
A Guinea al a sight—

The fine—impalpable Array—
That swaggers on the eye
Like Cleopatra´s Company—
Repeated—in the sky—

The Moments of Dominion
That happen on the Soul
And leave it with a Discontent
Too exquisite—to tell—

The eager look—on Landscapes—
As if they just repressed
Some Secret—that was pushing
Like Chariots—in the Vest—

The Pleading of the Summer—
That other Prank—of Snow—
That Cushions Mystery with Tulle,
For fear the Squirrels—know.

Their Graspless manners—mock us—
Until the Cheated Eye
Shuts arrogantly—in the Grave—
Another way—to see—

EMILY DICKINSON. 258

Claude Monet (1840-1926). Pintor francésLa Catedral de Rouen.

Hay una cierta Inclinación de la luz,
Tardes de Invierno—
Que oprime, como la Gravedad
Del Cántico en los Templos—

Celestial Herida, nos deja—
Sin otra Marca
Que la diferencia interior,
Donde las Significaciones se instalan—

Ninguna puede aprenderse—Cualquiera—
Es la Insignia de la Desesperanza—
Poderosa aflicción
Que el Aire nos depara—

Cuando llega, el Paisaje la escucha—
Las Sombras—contienen la respiración—
Cuando se aleja, es como la Distancia
En los ojos de la Muerte—

(Traducción: Amalia Rodríguez Monroy)

There´s a certain Slant of light,
Winter Afternoons—
That oppresses, like the Heft
Of Cathedral Tunes—

Heavenly Hurt, it gives us—
We can find no scar,
But internal difference,
Where the Meanings, are—

None may teach it—Any—
 'Tis the Seal Despair—
An imperial affliction
Sent us of the Air—

When it comes, the Landscape listens—
Shadows—hold their breath—
When it goes 'tis like the Distance
On the look of Death—

EMILY DICKINSON. 441

This is my letter to the World
That never wrote to Me—
The simple News that Nature told—
With tender Majesty

Her Message is committed
To Hands I cannot see—
For love of Her—Sweet—countrymen—
Judge tenderly—of Me.
